What is the Rosen Method
The Rosen Method is a unique form of bodywork pioneered by Marion Rosen, a German who lived and worked in the USA until she was 97. As a physiotherapist she discovered that there is strong connection between human emotions and physical muscle tension.
As human beings, we unconsciously create this tension as a protection against outside influences. Our feelings have to go somewhere, and when they are suppressed or left unexpressed, they get ‘put away’ in our muscles. Where there is a tight muscle there is no breath and no movement, and this causes constriction and often pain. With the Rosen Method’s unique ‘touch and talk’ technique, the muscles can soften and tension is released. After the emotion has been experienced there is an enormous sense of relief and ease in the body. Tension that has been there for years can be released, attitudes can change and increased movement can be felt in the breath and throughout the whole body.
A Rosen Method session involves the practitioner running his or her hands over a subject’s body, ‘ tuning ‘ into its unique rhythm of breathing – and its individual source of life. This touch connects the ‘Pranamayakosha’ or energy/breath sheath of the body with the ‘Manomayakosha’ or mental /emotional sheath of the subtle body, as described in Yogic literature.
Unlike other styles of bodywork, there is no agenda for a Rosen session. And each session can be markedly different. The body feels ‘met’ by the hands, and the practitioner ‘listens’ with his/ her hands with compassion. There is no rush, there is no stress and no noise. A session becomes an opportunity for the body to ‘let go’ and to deeply relax. When the body is in this state, the immune system goes into the ‘para sympathetic’ mode – a unique space where emotions may be deeply felt. There is no doing, just being. This is the place of true connection to self.
For me personally, I can honestly say that The Rosen Method changed my life. I had always wanted to be a professional athlete – a dream that never materialized. So I went traveling to find myself, and soon became sick in India with a bug that developed into reactive arthritis. My knees and feet swelled up and I couldn’t walk properly. I tried different remedies and therapies and found little comfort in any of them. I walked with a limp and had constant pain – I never thought I would walk properly again. And then I had my first Rosen session.
In this first session I lay on the table wondering what I was supposed to be feeling, and not a little concerned that nothing much seemed to be going on. Then after about 20 minutes, I suddenly saw my life flash in front of my eyes. In a soft voice the practitioner asked “what are you running from?” And it was true. I had been running from my life. I had recently kept going back and forth between London and foreign places, apparently looking for something, but not knowing quite what. And here, in this Rosen session, the flood gates opened.
All of a sudden I felt more relaxed and at peace with myself than I had ever felt in my life before.”How on earth did she know that that simple question would allow for some much release?” I cried tears that had been pent up for years. Had all that stress been caught up in my MUSCLES?From that point on so many things seemed to fall into place. I had felt so uncomfortable in my own body for years. Was it all pent up tension I had ‘forgotten’ about? “ Had my body really stored it away? Apparently it had. After I had cried and let go I found an incredible sense of peace and ease in my body. I felt alive and vibrant again.
I went on to receive many more sessions and found that each time I became more and more in tune with myself. I dropped a dress size without any effort. One day I decided to stop drinking for a week, and that turned into 20 years! I felt peace and calm on a regular basis. Things that had previously made me angry just didn’t affect me in the same way anymore.
So this is what the Rosen Method is – a profound form of ‘letting go.’
In short order, I signed up for the training, and over the next four yearstook instruction from some of the best Rosen practitioners in the world, including Marion Rosen herself.
“Know thyself.” Rosen helped me do exactly that. And it is, without doubt, the best and most important thing I have ever done in my life.
“This work is about transformation, from the person we think we are to the person we really are. In the end we can’t be anyone else” – Marion Rosen.
